Each life experience, from the deepest to the most mundane,

can be an encounter with the life-giving Mystery.

My definition of spiritual direction

To me, spiritual direction is the fine art of regular, prayerful listening together for how the Spirit is moving and creating in the events of your everyday life. There are many models of offering spiritual direction and I’ve realized that, according to the leading of Spirit and the need of the client, I draw on the wisdom of them all.

Spiritual direction is not to solve problems or learn strategies or even to make improvements in yourself (though all of that may happen.) It is not pastoral counseling or psychological therapy or talking with a mentor. It is also not sacramental confession (though spiritual direction does emphasize the very real availability of forgiveness.)

The director, more like a companion with training, bears witness to and gives witness that what the seeker seeks is Real; that their heart that speaks of Love without end has not deceived them. The director desires to help the directee recognize and interpret each “ordinary” life experience from the deepest to the most mundane, as an encounter with the Life-giving Mystery.

The director assumes in the directee a desire to grow in openness and unity with God however the directee understands that Great One to be. The question is often asked, “How is the surrender going?

The director/companion offers the commitment to be in daily prayer for the directee; offering, too, her training, time, tools, and tenderness.
